History and Vision

Who We ArWe are a community of faith challenging people to fully integrate their lives, work and calling through active relationship with God and others. We recognize the value of both the artist and the arts mediums as essential to the church as it seeks to live out the mission of God in the 21st century. We are committed to being a community of faith that fuels imagination in God’s service. We are Christ-followers who seek to contribute to our culture and live in community with our neighbors and our world through love, service and cultural contribution. In this way we live out our calling to love God with our heart, mind, body and soul and love our neighbors as ourselves.

Mission

Vision for the Church at Convergence

To live out the mission of Jesus as an imaginative people engaging in whole-life worship and authentic community.

  • Mission of Jesus -  As members of the Church we strive to love, serve, and give to all people of all nations. At Convergence we want to live out this mission in our local community and specifically with the artistic community of Northern Virginia and Washington, DC.

  • Imaginative People – In creation we see the incredible imagination and creativity of our God. We are created in God’s image and given immense capacity for imaginative thinking. We live out our love for God by exercising that imagination in many languages and endeavors.

  • Engaging – Worship is too often a spectator activity. We believe that God wants worship to be participatory; that all are to be actively involved and committed in worship.

  • Whole-life worship – Worship is not just singing songs on Sunday morning. We worship God by honoring, experiencing, and reflecting God in every aspect of our lives. We worship God simply by gratefully enjoying the life the Creator has given – reading a good book, laughing with our kids, engaging in honest conversation, enjoying a delicious meal, listening to and making beautiful music, etc.

  • Authentic Community – There is so much pressure in our world and our churches to seem perfect; to have it all together and to be self-sufficient. While a personal relationship with Jesus is God’s desire, so is an authentic community relationship with God and one another. Being authentic means being open about our real lives, real struggles, real joys, and really living together in Christ.

Our Vision

History

Convergence is a  "re-start." This means a church of 60 years which dwindled to an active membership of 20 people has committed to radically change directions, bringing in new leadership and becoming a new entity. The former church was Fair-Park Baptist. We are becoming Convergence: A Creative Community of Faith.

Convergence plans to be a venue resource as studio, gallery, rehearsal and performance space to local artists in the community. We would like to network with other organizations to provide additional resources to artists and partner with local service organizations to contribute through the arts to the needs of our local community.

We are eager to have conversations and find ways to be a resource both as fertile ground for artistic pursuit and as a church that recognizes the needs of creative people and values their significant contribution to our ability to encounter God.
